Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of blindness
in the United States and many European countries. The neovascular or
"wet" form of the disease is responsible for most cases of
severe loss of vision.
There are
hundreds of thousands of new cases of wet macular degeneration in the
United States every year. The average age of patients with the wet
form of macular degeneration is the mid-70s. It rarely occurs before
the age of 50. Wet macular degeneration is more common in whites,
but occurs in all races.
Macular degeneration is usually mild, but can
in some circumstances have severe consequences in which the center
vision is lost. While macular degeneration does not cause complete
blindness, it can result in the inability to read words or recognize
faces. This is because macular degeneration strikes the center of
vision, which is the most critical area used to see details.
The National Eye Institute proved that certain
vitamin supplements can slow the progression of macular
degeneration.
